And you're
totally right, the atmosphere and music do the story telling. the
atmosphere of skyward sword was pretty good, but I can't remember a
single memorable songJoshnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3367546586408407055.post-46714433776241696552012-10-26T21:46:57.279-05:002012-10-26T21:46:57.279-05:00LOL I love the title of section 2.LOL I love the title of section 2.Jamie Millernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3367546586408407055.post-20697646661486392732012-10-26T18:19:32.892-05:002012-10-26T18:19:32.892-05:00Just a quick point about 4, I always felt that the...Just a quick point about 4, I always felt that the story in Zelda games was more about atmosphere than any direct plotting. Having the creepy-cool background music moving around as a wolf at night in Twilight Princess is what I thought of specifically. Also, totally forgot about the Skull Kid drawings!James Cameronnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3367546586408407055.post-86328779266147057872012-10-26T18:00:05.619-05:002012-10-26T18:00:05.619-05:00You're spot on with points 1 and 2. The only flying I've really liked in any game is Crimson Skies. That was a game ABOUT flying. In Skyward Sword, flight is just a way to get around, and it is way clunkier than travel by land or sea. I know we differ on this point, but I really don't like the "island exploration" feel of it, either. This was a problem with Phantom Hourlgass (haven't played Wind Waker, but I expect I'd feel the same way). OoT and Majora's Mask both had only land travel, which I think disguises their island nature better. They feel like complete worlds, with side paths and shortcuts that interconnect the regions. They do have island elements. For example, the ranch in each one is an island in the middle of the field. The difference is, there are small details to explore and secrets to discover in seemingly unremarkable parts of the field. The skull kid drawings of Terminia Field make that world feel more complete. Having ocean or empty air between the islands takes away the little details that fill in the world, and you're left with just the bigger pieces, disconnected from each other. Related: traveling by horse in a field is much more immersive than the boats of zelda or the flying of skyward sword. You can ride Epona right up to any area of interest in Hyrule field. Then you decide if it's worth dismounting to explore further. When traveling by boat or by bird, you can't get close to areas of interest anymore. You have to moor your boat, or jump off your bird, to explore an island, and then embark once again when you've finished exploring. It makes exploration feel discontinuous to me, and is a big reason why I love having actual hyrule fields, and not water or air versions of that.

Regarding your 4th point, Zelda has always told the story through significant length cutscenes. the ones at the beginning of skyward sword were longer than necessary, but the rest of the game isn't like that. there are very few cutscenes overall. I don't feel like zelda has ever been much about story telling, which is probably why the cutscenes are so off-putting to you. in fact, zelda is approximately as much about story telling as mario is.Joshnoreply@blogger.com
